What is Editorial Wedding Photography?

You may have seen this term pop up when looking for wedding photography. Its everywhere. Everyone claims to be an 'editorial wedding photographer'. It sounds fancy, posh, aspiration. VOGUE magazine has popularised the term and its easy to think its the inly style for wedding photos these days. But what exactly does it mean?

We describe our style as contemporary editorial blended with candid. Editorial simply refers to a style inspired by magazines and fashion. It is not the 'opposite' of candid. You can have candid editorial photos - they do not have to be posed. You may come across highly polished, highly posed portraits of beautiful couples when searching for editorial wedding photography. This does not have to be the case - we think editorial photos can be candid, in the moment, and completely unpolished. But they will look more 'stylish' than a typical 'candid' photo. There has been some intentional thought into the framing of the shot, the lighting and the positioning. Below we've posted some examples of what we believe editorial photography is and can be - some of them are posed, most are not. But they showcase the couple, their decor and surroundings in a way that is beautiful.

Do I Want Editorial Wedding Photos?

It is such a good question that we get asked a lot - what style do I want? It is so subjective - there is no right or wrong answer. When we shoot a wedding, we spend the majority of the day NOT posing our couples. We are flies on the wall. But we thoughtfully capture those moments - the photos are not the same as the ones taken by your guests. For a short amount of time we do pose our couples to get some of the shots you can see above - each couple is different - some are keen to pose and some are not. We work with them to bring out their style and personality. The 'editorial' part of the style is ensuring the photos look stylish whilst making sure they are unique to the couple.

Will I Suit Editorial Wedding Photography?

The simple answer is yes. But within the editorial style there are so many sub-styles. Each couple is unique. We work together to ensure you get your personality across. If you want high fashion, you will get that. If you want moody - let us know. If you are all smiles - thats amazing. Remember we are there to work with you, not the other way around. It is so important to have a good think about what you envision your photos to look like - remember you get one shot at this! If there are any specific photos or poses you want please let us know. The last thing you want to do is regret missing out on certain photos!

Is Editorial Wedding Photography More Expensive?

NO! It may look more expensive. The weddings may look more high end. The locations may look more lavish. That may sometimes be the case. But don't be fooled. We have managed to get some of our best 'editorial' photos at weddings in the couples back garden. Dont get us wrong - having huge amounts of florals, a massive chandelier and a gorgeous venue can help but at the end of the day, its you as the couple and your guests who make the wedding. It is our job to make the day look special for you. So no, don't assume editorial styled photographers are more expensive.
